Our Top 10 Tips For Your Engagement Session

March 07, 2016  •  Leave a Comment

Engagement sessions are a great way for us to get to know one another, and to show us how you respond in front of the camera. Everyone reacts differently in front of the lens, and on your wedding day things are usually a bit rushed and nerves are high, so becoming comfortable with each other beforehand is priceless! Best of all, engagement sessions are always included at no extra cost to you when you book us for your wedding. It's a win-win!

  1. Makeup! Wear more of it than you might usually.

While you may feel like it looks too fake or heavy in person, it will look better on camera, we promise! It is even a great idea to schedule your wedding makeup trial for your wedding day on the day of your engagement session. Not sure what you want that look to be yet? That's ok! It's still a great opportunity to have a trial run with your makeup artist to make sure you both jive and for them to get to know your skin better!

           2. Wear clothes that fit you well!

Nothing too baggy or too tight as these things are accentuated on camera and usually end up not being very flattering. If you feel like you have to constantly adjust something, then it's probably not going to be a good idea for wearing during your session.

          3. Wear some color!

Rich colors look fantastic,, turquoise, deep red, rich green...ect. You and your love should coordinate your colors without being too "matchy matchy". We are more than happy to help with this- please feel free to ask us for suggestions.

          4. Accessorize!

Belts, hats, scarves, necklaces, and of course very cool shoes. Don't underestimate the power of some fantastic shoes or hat at a photo shoot! Show some personality with your accessories. Look at some pictures in magazines and of course pintrest if you are having trouble putting together a look. See what you like and go shopping, have fun!

          5. Bring multiple options for outfits to the shoot!

It is always a good idea to have choices. Sometimes there are things that we know will not work well on camera or with the chosen location, so it is best to have backup options.

          6. Men, be aware of your socks!

There is nothing worse than a great shot of you with some white tube socks taking all the attention away! Ladies, also remember to not wear tight socks before the shoot as well, as they do leave marks!

          7. Watches, Bracelets, Rings- Proceed With Caution!

These are typically not accessories that add to the shot; they can be quite distracting at times. Picture a sweet shot of your hand gently touching your love's cheek....but wait, a big shiny metal watch is stealing the show! However, of course if it is a piece that is special to you, we can help work it in. There can be exceptions to this rule as well depending on your personal fashion- like the badass statement bracelet in the shot above! If in doubt, bring it with you and we can help decide if it adds to the shot or is too distracting.

          8. Relax....

The most important thing to remember is to try to relax. Focus on each other and not us. We will direct you and help you to know what to do. We will give you more direction if needed, but we are not talking, just keep snuggling or smooching! Just be you!

         9. Some lovely affectionate gestures that look great on camera:

A kiss on the cheek, nose, forehead, or even an exposed shoulder. You can smile or close your eyes when your love does this. Even whispering something naughty or sweet into each other's ears makes for a great natural reaction!

          10. Remember that you are in love!

That is why you are doing this; it is more about that than looking perfect. Be yourself, have fun and let us take care of the rest!

Lastly- Congratulations on your engagement!! You have such a fun and exciting journey ahead of you. It can be easy to get bogged down during the planning process of a wedding, but remember to take time for yourselves to reflect on why you are taking this journey together. You have the opportunity to make some beautiful memories- so breathe, be present, laugh, and love!
